Kiswahili (Swahili) is a major Bantu language spoken in East Africa. There are an estimated 50,000,000 speakers, which makes it the most widely spoken language on the African continent. Approximately 2,000,000 people use Swahili as a home language. Swahili is an official language of Tanzania, and is a national language in Kenya and Uganda. Swahili is also spoken in a number of other countries in the region, including the DRC, Rwanda, Burundi, northern Mozambique and Somalia.

Free to use online Swahili - English dictionary, has been expanded and recently updated (2006-10) to include over 15,000 Swahili to English entries, and many more in the English index.
-> Unlike in standard (stem-based) dictionaries, Swahili words can be looked up as they are spoken or written. This dictionary is being created/compiled by Pitta Joffe, Sarah Hillewaert, Gilles-Maurice de Schryver and David Joffe. A 15-million-word electronic Swahili corpus, built by Gilles-Maurice de Schryver and David Joffe, is being used. This work in progress is being compiled using David Joffe's lexicography software TshwaneLex, and is online since 10 May 2004.
